Baton Rouge Area Chamber offering tips for businesses to stay prepared for natural disasters

BATON ROUGE, La. (NBC 33)(FOX 44) – Most of the time you hear about how to stay safe in your home during an emergency, but what about your business?

The Baton Rouge Area Chamber released their annual emergency preparedness guide to help business owners stay prepared for a natural disaster.

Officials say many small businesses were unprepared during the 2016 flood and were not insured and not having a plan can put your business at risk.

It takes a lot to get your building back up or your employees back to work. If you don’t have a plan in place for your finances or your people, it can really put you behind or out of business, says Senior Marketing VP Kelly Bienn.

Some tips include:

  • Have an evacuation plan
  • Plan how to continue operating if the building, physical plant or store is inaccessible
  • Back up computerized records daily and store the backups
  • Review business insurance options
  • Maintain a list and contact information for all employees and mission-critical business partners
