BRAC’s June 15 COVID-19 Brief: Refusal of Work Reporting

Businesses across the U.S. are relaying that a major challenge they face is rehiring furloughed or laid off employees, a challenge driven by the generous federal supplement to unemployment insurance creating a greater incentive to remain on benefits than to return to work. The Louisiana Workforce Commission has developed a reporting mechanism for Louisiana employers to report such incidences, which would disqualify individuals from all claims, including regular unemployment, and discontinue payments. As BRAC has written about here and here, this reporting mechanism is critical to incentivizing individuals to forgo the generous weekly unemployment insurance supplement in favor of returning to work, and to allowing small business owners to reopen successfully.
