Roaming the Region

With a revitalized downtown buzzing with live music, dozens of museums, and art galleries; some of the best libraries in America; and over 180 parks which offer free activities ranging from rock climbing to paddle boarding lessons, there’s always something going on in the Baton Rouge Area to keep your calendar full. 

Check out a few events happening around the region this month: 

January 4: Free Women’s Self Defense Seminar 

Gracie United Jiu Jitsu is hosting a free self-defense seminar for women at ts Gonzales location located at 14210 Airline Highway. 

January 14: Zoo & Me Morning: Paws & Claws 

Zoo & Me Mornings, held by BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo on the second Tuesday of every month from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., are designed for three to five-year-old children accompanied by an adult. The event includes a train ride, animal encounters, art projects and special snacks. 

January 17-21: MLK Fest 2020  

MLK Fest 2020 is a volunteer-led service event and one of Baton Rouge’s most popular clean-up and beautification projects. Over the four days, volunteers will work on a variety of projects including painting, gardening and other projects aimed to enhance Baton Rouge. 

January 19: Cajun French Music Association Open Jam  

The Cajun French Music Association puts on monthly jam sessions for anyone looking to join in with the band or sing and dance to the music. The West Baton Rouge Museum in Port Allen is now the permanent host for these events. 

January 19: The Louisiana Marathon, Half Marathon, Quarter & 5K 

Baton Rouge is hosting the 9th annual running of the Louisiana Marathon and Half Marathon. The races will begin and end near the State Capitol. While running, participants will be able to soak in classic Red Stick views such as the Old Governor’s Mansion, the Old State Capitol Building and Tiger Stadium. 

January 25: Watson’s 10th Annual Bird & Sausage Gumbo Cookoff 

Head on over to the Livingston Parish Fairgrounds with an empty stomach to enjoy the 10th annual Watson’s Bird and Sausage Gumbo Cookoff. 

January 26: Uncorked Wine and Food Showcase Fundraiser
