Talent Initiatives, Future Energy Investments Top BRAC’s 2023 Accomplishments 

Regional EDO highlights progress in second year of five-year strategic plan 

Baton Rouge, La. (January 8, 2024) – The Baton Rouge Area Chamber (BRAC) today released key accomplishments achieved by the organization in 2023, the second year of its BRING IT! Baton Rouge strategic plan. The organization’s five-year plan can be viewed at brac.org/bringit

“After a monumental first year of the BRING IT! strategic plan, year two was marked with sustained action among each of the plan’s four goals,” said Ann Trappey, BRAC interim president and CEO. “2023 saw BRAC hit major milestones in its talent pipeline work, such as beginning development of its national talent attraction campaign, expanding its high school internships initiative, and increasing business and student usage of the early recruitment platform Handshake. Coupled with new economic development investments and quality of life enhancements, this past year laid the groundwork for even bigger announcements in 2024.” 

Notable outcomes from 2023 include: 

  • Helped facilitate 12 new investments to the Capital Region, representing nearly 500 new direct jobs, retaining 2,100 existing jobs, and $430 million in capital investment 
  • Facilitated 252 high school student internships in career pathways outlined by the Talent Action Collaborative, in collaboration with EBR Schools, as part of a business/education partnership 
  • Increased the number of area businesses using Handshake, the largest online platform connecting employers with college students, by 529 businesses 
  • Launched Progress by the Numbers, a public-facing dashboard to allow members of the community to track progress the Capital Region is making on key metrics 
  • Announced five feasibility investment opportunities representing a potential of $4.1 billion in capital investment and 1,851 new jobs 
  • Championed the formation of a multi-regional team to increase energy investments along the Louisiana Gulf Coast through the $75 million Louisiana Future Energy initiative, H2theFuture 
  • Advocated for Louisiana to gain primary responsibility to issue and enforce Class VI (carbon sequestration) well permits, which was recently approved 
  • Secured $1 million for the Capital Region to market development-ready sites for new economic development project opportunities 
  • Authored and successfully passed Act 374, standardizing oversight and minimum operating requirements for companies that administer offender tracking systems (ankle monitors) 
  • Authored and successfully passed Act 352, creating a local incentive to attract major concerts and festivals to East Baton Rouge Parish 
  • Authored and supported a local ordinance addressing abandoned and blighted signage  
  • Assisted more than 150 regional small businesses through BRAC’s free small business services, an increase of 25% over 2022 
  • Launched the second cohort of the Drive Minority Business Accelerator powered by ExxonMobil with a class of 11 CEOs representing approximately $54.3 million in annual revenue 
  • Hosted the Career Immersive Experience, connecting over 1,200 high school students with 50 Capital Region businesses in high-wage, high-demand industries 
  • Hosted a sold-out young professional event with Forum 225, Baton Rouge’s largest young professionals’ organization, to better introduce the region’s young professionals to the community
